Women Empowerment Conference
Makes a Difference!
Virginia Beach, VA, November 1, 2003--The
Sykes Group and Norfolk State University co-hosted the first Women's Empowerment
Conference entitled, "Upward Bound Women: Unity and Power," on September 30, 2003
at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The
conference was dedicated to the career, personal, health, and financial needs of
upwardly mobile women in the Hampton Roads area.
"The idea for the Women's Empowerment Conference came to us out of necessity," says Ed Sykes
and Joy Fisher-Sykes,
Co-Founders of The Sykes Group, experts in providing empowerment programs for
individuals and organizations. "While working with women
professionals we noticed that many women had the skills to be successful, but
there was always something that would hold them back from achieving and
excelling to their fullest potential in their careers and personal live.
Many times these female professionals only need a mentor to share the tools to
succeed."
Highlights of
the conference include the following events:

series of innovative and interactive sessions, as well as a panel discussion
with the experts, provided conference participants with nourishment to enrich
their mind, body, and soul in order to achieve their life's goals.

Attendees were greeted at opening ceremonies by several
distinguished dignitaries including Ms. Meyora Oberndorf, Mayor, City of
Virginia Beach, Dr. Marie McDemmond, President, Norfolk State University, and
Dr. Marilyn Brodus-Gay, Director of NSU's Continuing Education and Dean of
Liberal Arts.

Nineteen sponsors and pampering session exhibitors from the
Hampton Roads area generously supported the women's conference with their
participation: Advance Fuller School of Massage Therapy, Elements of
Beauty, Lee Jeans, Mary Kay Cosmetics-Amy Robbins, Mystery Dinner Playhouse of
Virginia Beach, National Coalition for Women, Norfolk Wholesale Floral
Corporation, Pargo's Restaurant, Power House Advertising, Inc., Professional
Printing Center, South Trust Bank, Spirit of Norfolk Harbor Cruises, Stihl Inc.,

Throughout the day, a plethora of gifts and fabulous prizes
was awarded to participants including: a cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk, a
weekend retreat at the Holiday Inn-Chesapeake, a basket of cosmetics, and much,
much more. A continental breakfast and formal lunch was served providing
attendees with an opportunity to meet and network among their peers.

The day was capped off with a personal pampering session
with provided attendee the opportunity to wind down and pamper their bodies with
massages, manicures, skin analysis, make-up skin care for free to a nominal fee.
