Five Secrets to Gaining Your Managerís Trust for Success in the Workplace

By Ed Sykes

Trust is an important part of teambuilding. Creating an environment of trust helps to foster team productivity and increases cohesiveness that takes your team to the next level. Creating trust between you and your manager creates new freedoms and opportunities for you.

Trust between you and your manager is built over time. However, it can be broken in a moment. Continuously work to ensure that the trust between you and your manager is solid. The following are five secrets to gaining the trust of your manager:

1. Inform Your Manager of Challenging Situations Ė Managers donít like to be the last person to know about a challenging situation. Your manager especially doesnít like to hear about a challenging situation involving their department or team from another peer or upper management. Invest the time to keep your manager informed of any situation that could potentially be challenging or has escalated. Bring your manager in on the situation and ask for their feedback and help.

2. Return Calls, Emails, Etc. in a Timely Manner Ė In this age of technology and communication, there is never a reason not to return your managerís communication in a timely manner. Your manager needs the information you provide them to make time-sensitive decisions. Quickly answering your managerís communication shows you respect your manager and that you are a team player. The same applies to communicating with your customers and other members in the organization. You want to gain a reputation as someone who quickly answers communication and works to help others, whether inside the organization or outside the organization.

3. Deliver What You Promised Ė We all want to impress our managers. Managers trust employees who can continually deliver on their promises. Make sure you deliver on your promises to your manager. If it turns out that you canít deliver, talk with your manager and explain what the situation is and ask for their help. But overall, manage your time and resources so you can deliver on your promise to your manager ahead of time. Remember, it is far better to under promise and over deliver than to over promise and under deliver.

4. Address Urgent Situations Immediately Ė When your manager asks for you to take care of something ASAP, take care of it immediately. If you receive an email from your manager asking you to contact a client who is having technical problems with their new system, donít wait until the end of the day, make the call immediately! You gain the trust of the manager when you immediately follow up on their requests because they can count on it being done. Also, make sure you give your manager updates on whatever task they gave you to keep them in the loop.

5. Ask for the Resources You Need to Be Successful Ė Sometimes, as employees, we feel as if we are a burden if we ask for the resources we need to be successful. You are actually helping your manager if you ask for exactly what you need to be a successful team member. Like the old saying goes, ďIf you donít ask for it, you wonít get it.Ē Your manager would rather allocate once for the resources rather than acquire the resources time and time again. You will gain trust from the manager because they will see you as someone who is confident in asking for what they want and can manage their resources. Even if you need additional resources and help, ask for it early and give a logical, clear reason why you need these resources. In most cases your manager will comply.

Apply these five secrets when working with your manager for more success in your career. When you gain the trust of your manager, new opportunities will open up for you.
